Altamont North Carolina
History
Altamont is an unincorporated community in Avery County, North Carolina. The community is located along US 221/NC 194 (Linville Falls Highway), between the town of Crossnore and the community of Linville Falls.
The Ray Wiseman House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
Named For
Alta Mont
Formed from the words “alta” meaning high, and “mont” meaning mountain, Altamont was originally known as Grasslands. The post office was established as Trout in 1883, renamed Altamont in 1892, and discontinued in 1953.
